Power running boards (you’ll also hear them called power steps, electric running boards, retractable running boards or retractable steps) fold down and out when you open the door and tuck back up under the truck when you close it. You get a real step to climb in on, and nothing hanging down when you’re driving. We sell and install them at our shop in Manvel, TX, for truck owners from Pearland, Houston and the surrounding area.

Product Spotlight: Rough Country Dual-Motor E-Board Power Running Boards
We sell just about every power step on the market. In our opinion, Rough Country’s Dual Motor E-Board is the best power step ever made, and it’s our top pick. Here’s why:
- Two motors on every board. Each board gets a motor on the front and rear arm, which gives it more power every time it deploys and retracts.
- Built heavy. Rough Country rates it at 660 lb per side (600 lb on the 4-door Bronco). The step is a 6-inch-wide aluminum board with a textured anti-slip coating (4.75-inch on Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator).
- The features you want come standard. LED lights come on when the boards drop, SAFE-STOP halts the board if something’s in the way, and an interior switch lets you override them manually.
- Clean bolt-on install. No drilling, and the boards tuck up tight under the rocker panel for a clean, in-line look when they’re closed.
- Fits the most trucks. F-150, Super Duty, Ram, Silverado/Sierra, Tundra, Tacoma, Jeep and Bronco, plus Tahoe/Yukon, Expedition and Nissan Titan.
- Backed twice. Rough Country lists a 5-year limited replacement warranty, and we back our installation labor for life.

Dual Motor E-Board vs. Single Motor
Rough Country also makes a single-motor version, which it calls the HT Series. It’s the lower-cost option, with one motor per board instead of two, and it still gives you a good step for daily driving. Both get the same $400 professional install, with a lifetime warranty on our labor.

Other Power Running Board Brands We Sell and Install
The Rough Country Dual Motor E-Board is our pick, but every truck and budget is different, and we sell and install these too. Ask for a quote and we’ll price whichever one fits your truck.
AMP Research PowerStep
AMP Research has been making the PowerStep since 2002, and it’s now part of RealTruck. The lineup includes the standard PowerStep, the PowerStep XL (it drops up to 3 inches lower for lifted trucks), the PowerStep XTreme (two motors per side, built for snow, ice and mud), and the PowerStep Smart Series, which adds a phone app so you can deploy or retract the boards on demand. They have 6-inch-wide aluminum steps with LED lighting, a plug-n-play harness on many applications, and vehicle-specific kits for a wide range of trucks and SUVs. RealTruck lists a 5-year limited warranty.
Aries ActionTrac
ActionTrac uses Aries’ “step-within-a-step” design. A 4-inch fixed step runs along the top, and a 3-inch powered step drops 8 inches below it when the door opens, up to 15 inches below the doorsill depending on the model. That makes it a good fit for lifted trucks and Jeeps. It has obstacle detection, LED lighting, a powder-coated aluminum housing and no-splice wiring, and most models install with no drilling (some Ram models need it). Kits are made for specific vehicles, including F-Series, Ram 2500/3500, Tacoma and Jeep.
Go Rhino E-BOARD E1
Go Rhino’s E1 electric running boards have dual motors on every board, a 6-inch anti-slip aluminum step, built-in LEDs, an automatic SAFE-STOP and an interior bypass switch. Hands-free magnetic door switches leave your OBD port open for other accessories. You can get them in textured black powder coat or Go Rhino’s bedliner finish, and they cover trucks, Jeeps, Broncos and SUVs.
Westin Pro-e
Westin’s Pro-e power running boards use two IP68 waterproof motors per side and a 6-inch corrosion-resistant aluminum step in textured black powder coat. They have integrated LED lighting and are rated for 300 lb per side. Vehicle-specific brackets make it a no-drill install. Westin lists a 5-year warranty and a limited lifetime warranty on the LEDs, and covers trucks, Bronco, Jeep and SUVs.
Wolfbox Power Running Boards
Wolfbox boards run a single sealed IP67 motor per side and are rated for 660 lb per side. They have a 6-inch textured aluminum step, LED lighting and anti-pinch protection with a 3-second delay before retracting. Instead of magnets, they read the door signal from the truck’s CAN bus. It’s a no-drill install, Wolfbox lists a 5-year limited warranty, and fitments include F-150 and Super Duty, Ram 1500 and TRX, and Silverado/Sierra.

How Power Running Boards Work
- You open a door. A sensor sees it. Rough Country, Go Rhino and Westin kits use small magnetic door triggers, while brands like Wolfbox and AMP Research read the signal from the truck itself.
- The board drops. A control module powers the motors, and the board swings down and out into a solid step, with the LEDs lighting it up.
- You close the door. After a short delay, the board tucks back up under the rocker panel, out of the way and out of sight.
- It stops if something’s in the way. Most kits, including Rough Country’s, have an automatic safety stop if the board hits an obstruction.
Single vs. dual motor, in plain English: a single-motor set drives each board with one motor, and a dual-motor set puts a motor on both the front and rear arms of each board. Dual motors give you more muscle on every board, which is why the Dual Motor E-Board is our pick. Single-motor kits keep the price down and still give you a good step.
Will Power Running Boards Fit My Truck?
Probably. Here’s what Rough Country’s Dual Motor E-Board and Single Motor boards cover on the trucks we see most. Fitment depends on cab style and sometimes trim, so we always confirm before ordering.

Power Running Board FAQs
How much do power running boards cost installed?
Our pick, the Rough Country Dual Motor E-Board, runs $1,299–$1,499 for parts. The lower-cost Single Motor version runs $999–$1,099. Professional installation is $400 on either one, so you’re at about $1,699–$1,899 installed for the Dual Motor E-Board or about $1,399–$1,499 for Single Motor, before tax. Both come with a lifetime warranty on our labor. We quote other brands for your specific truck.
How long does it take to install power steps?
About 6 hours. Drop your truck off the morning of your appointment and it’s done the same day.
Should I get single motor or dual motor?
Our pick is the Dual Motor E-Board. In our opinion it’s the best power step ever made, with two motors on every board and the widest fitment, including Tahoe/Yukon, Expedition, Nissan Titan, older Tundras, and 2-door Broncos and Wranglers. If budget comes first, Single Motor usually saves you about $300 and still gives you a good step. It also covers a couple of trucks the E-Board doesn’t, like the 2025–2026 4Runner and 1999–2007 Super Duty.
Do retractable running boards hold up to rain and mud?
They’re built for it. Rough Country’s boards are all-season aluminum with an anti-slip coating, and they tuck up under the rocker panel when closed, which also helps protect it from rocks and road debris. Other brands advertise sealed, waterproof motors (IP67 or IP68 ratings). Like anything with moving parts, it pays to rinse the mud and grime off the hinges now and then.
What’s the warranty on power running boards?
Rough Country lists a 5-year limited replacement warranty against structural and workmanship defects on its power running boards. AMP Research, Westin and Wolfbox each list a 5-year limited warranty. Go Rhino’s E1 is sold with a limited lifetime warranty on materials and construction, plus 5 years on the finish. We’ll confirm the exact terms for your part when we quote it. On top of that, we give you a lifetime warranty on our installation labor.
Will power running boards fit my truck?
Most likely. Rough Country alone covers the F-150, Super Duty, Ram 1500/2500/3500, Silverado/Sierra, Colorado/Canyon, Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, Wrangler, Gladiator, Bronco and more, and the other brands fill in the gaps. Cab style and trim matter, and so do things like factory rock sliders or aftermarket traction bars. Give us your year, make, model, cab and trim and we’ll confirm before ordering.
Power steps vs. nerf bars: what’s the difference?
Nerf bars and fixed running boards are always down, so they’re simpler and cost less, but they hang below the truck all the time. Power steps drop lower when the door opens, which gives you an easier step up, and then tuck away when you drive. That means a cleaner look and nothing hanging down to catch on curbs or trails. If you climb in and out a lot, or have kids or older folks riding along, power steps are worth it.
Do you sell brands other than Rough Country?
Yes. The Rough Country Dual Motor E-Board is our pick, but we also sell and install AMP Research, Aries, Go Rhino, Westin and Wolfbox power running boards. Tell us what you’re after and we’ll quote it.
